SP Training are now delivering International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) accredited training courses for users and managers of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs).

Mobile Vertical (3a)

Who should Attend?

If you need to work at height and use access equipment (MEWPs):

  • IPAF believes that you should receive basic training
  • In addition to your main job, e.g. electrician, painter, decorator, cleaner, you will acquire a new skill
  • Platforms are designed to be easy to use and offer a safe way to work at height, but with basic training you will use the equipment more effectively and safely

Course Content

  • Awareness of different types of MEWPs
  • Safe operation of MEWPs and limitations of use
  • Pre-use checks, inspection and function tests
  • Planning the route before operating the MEWP
  • Travelling the route and manoeuvring the MEWP

Safety Harness Course

While working at height is subject to numerous hazards and threats to health and safety, much of the risk can be mitigated with adequate prior training and the following of best practice.

One of the obvious pieces of equipment involved in reducing the risk of working at height is the safety harness. However, such equipment is useless and can even be more dangerous should it fall into the hands of workers who are improperly trained.

Who should attend safety harness training?

Safety Harness Training course is a must for anyone who works on MEWP equipment and wears safety harnesses or lanyards.

Details of our course

  • Our safety harness training will provide all attendees with a wealth of key theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • We show attendees how to choose the right equipment for the job.
  • We will demonstrate how to use fall arrest and restraint equipment
  • We will show how to carry out inspections of harnesses and lanyards as stipulated by health and safety regulations.

Course Content

  • Health & Safety Laws and Regulations
  • Responsibilities of employees and employers under these laws and regulations.
  • Different types of harnesses and lanyards
  • Safe inspection of equipment.
  • How to put on and wear harnesses.
  • Working safely with harnesses and lanyards.
  • Storage of harnesses and lanyards.

MEWPS for Managers

The MEWPs for Managers Course aims to instruct a supervisor/manager on what is required to prepare for and safely co-ordinate various types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) within their control. The course is suitable for all supervisors or managers in your company or organisation who control the work of others in the use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) including scissor lifts, self-propelled boom lifts, vehicle mounted booms, trailer mounted boom lifts and aerial work platforms.

Who should attend this course?
The course is aimed at supervisors and managers who are, or will be, responsible for overseeing the use of MEWPs in the workplace. There are no pre-requisites to the course although a working knowledge of MEWPs is an advantage.

What will you get from the course?
Successful delegates will gain an understanding of current, relevant, legislation and best practice on a range of MEWPs, be able to carry out a pre-use inspection and most importantly use them safely, in line with current approved methods and manufacturer’s instructions. At the end of the course the candidate will:-

  • Be aware of current legislation, regulation, best practice and standards
  • Be aware of different types and classifications of MEWPs
  • Be aware of the importance of correct machine selection
  • Be able to select the correct PPE for the operator
  • Have a greater knowledge and awareness of the safe use and operation of MEWPs
  • Be able to identify misuse and abuse of MEWPs
  • Be aware of planning and maintenance considerations

Course content includes:

  • Health & Safety legislation & regulations
  • Limitations and use of mobile elevating work platforms
  • Identifying controls, safety devices and warning alarms
  • Daily and routine inspection and servicing requirements
  • Setting up in preparation for work
  • Ground and site conditions
  • Safe operating techniques
  • Emergency lowering procedures
  • Manufacturers Instruction Manuals
  • The use of Harnesses and Restraint Lanyards to prevent ejection
Push Around Vehicle (PAV)

Push Around Verticals (PAV) is the term used for (usually) small, non-mechanical vertical platforms that can be maneuvered into place manually (without the need for an engine of any kind). These platforms provide a low level access platform. Designed to meet working at height regulations, they are much safer than ladders and steps and cheaper than scaffolding and powered access platforms. Despite being very safe, operators of Push Around Verticals do require training in order to minimise risk.

PAVs are now becoming increasingly popular in a variety of workplaces including warehouses, store rooms and factories. As such, a much wider range of employees are required to operate them at some point. Ensuring that all staff are trained to operate them safely greatly reduces the risk of an accident, providing reassurance to managers, supervisors and employers.

Who should attend PAV training?

Anyone who is likely to operate a PAV in a workplace environment should complete PAV training. This will, in the largest part, include warehouse and stores staff but could potentially include people in a wide range of working environments; potentially any place where staff work at height.
