Les Clemens had a dream: to drive a lorry – and it was a dream he refused to give up on. After a previous attempt didn’t go as planned, he refused to let disappointment hold him back. Thanks to ELCAS funding, Les finally had the support he needed to pursue his ambition and take the wheel toward a new chapter in his career.
The ELCAS process itself was straightforward, and with guidance from his military resettlement team, Les felt supported every step of the way.
Starting something new is always a mix of excitement and nerves, and Les was no exception. On his first day at SP Training, the butterflies were real – but so was his drive to succeed.
“I found the ELCAS process fairly straightforward and was supported throughout by my military resettlement team. After being unsuccessful on a fully funded course the year before, I used ELCAS to help financially support my dream of becoming a lorry driver – and my determination to pass ultimately paid off.”
Although motivated, Les admits the nerves stayed with him throughout the course – fortunately, he found the encouragement and reassurance he needed through the support of his instructor, Martyn Cragg, and the team at SP Training’s Carlisle HQ.
“My instructor was absolutely brilliant and helped me conquer my nerves, allowing me to have every chance of passing. His ability to teach me despite the nerves was astounding.”

Martyn was equally proud of Les’ progress:
“Les was a cheerful, if slightly nervous, learner who approached his training with a positive attitude throughout. He listened carefully, took on feedback, and always gave his best – even when he found certain aspects challenging. Passing his test meant a great deal to him, and it was fantastic to see his hard work and determination pay off. He’s a great example of what can be achieved with commitment and perseverance.”
And then came the moment all the hard work had been building toward – passing his Class 2 test. Years of persistence, patience, and determination had finally paid off.
“Having tried for over a year to pass my test, it was amazing and has enabled me to fulfil my dream.”
