For Bernard Allen, becoming a lorry driver wasn’t just a career goal – it was a lifelong dream.
“I’ve wanted to do Class 1 driving since I was about five years old, when my dad took me out on the road with him. We’d travel around England for a few days at a time, and I was hooked. On my dad’s side of the family, most of the men have been in construction or truck driving, so it’s been in my heart from early on.”
But dreams don’t always come easy. After recently losing his job, Bernard found himself struggling to support his family. Then a friend told him about the opportunity to train with SP Training, and that single conversation changed everything.
That’s not to say it was all smooth sailing. Bernard found the jump from a car to an articulated lorry challenging at first.
“I struggled a little bit with the transition, but I took my time. I listened to everything my instructor said and learned from my mistakes. Every day, I felt a bit more confident behind the wheel.”
