Kier Transportation Upskills Liam Wright Through HGV Skills Bootcamp
Liam Wright, a highways operative with Kier Transportation, has successfully completed the CAT C+E Skills Bootcamp, gaining his articulated lorry licence and a renewed sense of confidence—both on and off the road.
With Kier co-funding the programme as part of their commitment to workforce development, Liam saw the Skills Bootcamp as the ideal opportunity to progress in his career.
“I enjoyed every minute of it, from induction right through to my test and Module 4 assessment. It was a class experience throughout.”
Despite initial nerves, Liam quickly settled in thanks to SP Training’s supportive team and expert instructors.
“Once I was in the cab, I realised that talking to my instructor and staying positive helped me beat the nerves.”
Liam had high praise for the staff:
“I can’t thank SP Training enough. From start to finish, they were absolutely class. Dave Turner was a great instructor—very knowledgeable and experienced. My Mod 4 classroom teacher Dave was the same—great teacher, very good at what he does. And Sharron Taylor from the office made the whole experience easy, stress-free, and an absolute laugh from start to finish.”
The Skills Bootcamp not only helped Liam gain his licence but also changed his perspective as a road user:
“It made me realise how things really are on the roads—now I definitely pay more attention when driving.”
Thanks to Kier’s investment and SP Training’s delivery, Liam is now equipped to take on new responsibilities such as operating traffic management vehicles and gritting roads in winter. But perhaps the biggest win has been personal:
“Although it’s a licence and will help me at work, I feel more confident as a person. Maybe it’s because I know that if I really try, I can achieve the skills I want in life.”
