SP Training Launches Construction Training To Boost Skills In Cumbria

SP Training has launched a new construction training programme to help deliver training to ensure both local employers and their workforces have the necessary skills to combat the national staff shortage.

In partnership with Carlisle College, the new range of construction courses will upskill local people, helping to keep jobs in the region and enable businesses to bid for and win work locally and nationally. There will also be expert assistance to help companies access and secure available funding for training.

Working alongside local employers like Story Contracting and P&H Plant Hire, SP Training has invested in new, bespoke training facilities at its Carlisle Airport headquarters. And by working collaboratively with Carlisle College, the firm now offers the option to deliver an all-encompassing solution for trades, plant and civils.

SP Training is set to help Cumbrian employers take advantage of commercial and residential opportunities by offering training programmes to support workforce development. With major local opportunities around the Garden City residential scheme, Borderlands investment and proposed works to upgrade the A66, it aims to equip local people with the necessary skills to take advantage of those job and career opportunities.

SP Training can supply a full suite of fully-accredited programmes aimed at plant operatives across firms including construction companies, building contractors, civil engineering and highways operatives.

The Carlisle company has the experience and skills as one of the UK’s premier training providers and will use that expertise to deliver an extensive range of crucial, high-quality training programmes specifically tailored to help meet the needs of local businesses.

It also offers health and safety courses, ranging from site operative to site manager, allowing workers to obtain their CPCS, NPORS and CSCS cards.

Tony Higgins, SP Training managing director, said: “After consulting with local businesses around their skills needs, we are proud to take the proactive step of launching the new construction training courses. SP Training is now able to offer an extensive and comprehensive range of fully-accredited training programmes to equip local people with the skills they need. There are many employment opportunities in the region and we want to address the current skills shortage to make sure local jobs go to local people.”

Fred Story, Story Contracting chief executive, said: “The building and construction industry is always ready to offer opportunities to bring young people into the industry and help kick-start long-term careers. Training, skills and qualifications play an important role to ensure we maintain the highest standards of quality and safety – so this new suite of training programmes from SP Training is a welcome addition for local employers.”
